73 x 19 cm.
Wood, snake skin, vertebrates of small mammals, horn.
Songye Nkisi fetish statuettes obtain their power from magical substances named Bishimba, inserted in their stomachs and heads.
Furthermore, this figurine is beautifully decorated, which is a sign of power.
Metal plating has been added to the face, in order to increase the force of the piece, probably destined to the protection of a family or a village, given its dimensions. Metallic objects, as well as diverse accessories, are used to emphasise the protective power of the mankisi (singular: nkisi).
The magnificent, smooth and oily patina obtained with palm oil libations, is also remarkable.
Marvellous style and antiquity, nice balance of the volumes.
This figurine was brought back in the 1950s by a school teacher.
