A study drawn for India Dreams Volume 7, to find the prettiest posture of the couple before the night of fury that would follow.
Jean-François Charles explained why these were particularly important for him:
'In my work, I manage to erase as little as possible. Even when redrawing several times an illustration in order to improve it, I happened to miss the first draft, which was ultimately the best and to think that my following tests were only complicating what was already a success. To avoid these regrets, I no longer erase, and I create my pencil drawings on slightly transparent sheets, in order to rework them on the light table when I am satisfied. I often have several sketches of the same illustration, to capture a posture, sometimes to refine the head or the hands, but the gist is to capture the idea that came to my mind in just a few minutes. At the end of the day, we make comic books, which implies a search for efficiency. We sometimes discard a sketch which was more beautiful and accomplished, but less effective storytelling’ of the plate.
'These sketches are often a little crumpled, because it is a working tool. Indeed, when I put together the different elements, I very neatly reproduce them on the light table on the plate, in order subsequently implement watercolours. As far as I'm concerned, I do not work in direct colours, because there are no black lines in the plate, I paint directly, and without safety net because watercolour is a wonderful technique, but it does not allow retouching. If I do not judge the panel suitable, I must do it entirely all over again, which is rare and makes me grumpy. And the main cause is often a initial bad study, which was not enough worked. So that is the reason why the sketch stage is so important: because it is when everything is being decided to avoid any doubts when I am painting the plate. Besides, the sketch has this magic of the first draft, completed without being destined to be published; a short moment of happiness, without any constraints, and which we are also never able to fully reproduce’.
