Germany - Army/Infantry - Medal for the Winter Battle in the Osten - with original pouch by Haubtmünzambt Vienna

Description
Germany - Army/Infantry - Medal for the Winter Battle in the Osten - with original pouch by Haubtmünzambt Vienna
Original - Zinc - Excellent condition

A 'Medal für die Winterschlacht im Osten 1941/42' (also known as Ostmedal or East Medal) is offered in the original envelope of issuance. The envelope is marked by the Haubtmünzambt in Vienna, where this medal was produced.
The medal is in very good condition considering its age. Often the silver finish on the outer edges is no longer visible because the colour is absorbed by the zinc. The high production quality of the Haubtmünzambt was fortunately able to prevent that in this medal.

The "Ostmedal" was awarded to both warlike and non-militant personnel who served on the German Eastern Front from November 15 1941 to April 15 1942. The medal was introduced on May 26 1942. Because of the bitter cold Russian winter of 1941-42 it was also mockingly called “Gefrierfleischorden” (frozen-meat medal).
