XXIV, 394 pp. One engraved frontisp. showing the author, 4 engraved maps (2 folded). Later half calf; private binding with owners' name on top of the spine.
* This is the second edition, printed in Denver; the first one was published in 1811. A newspaper article (ca. 1920) about Pike pasted in at the back. With maps of the Mississippi, the Falls of St. Anthony, the interior of Louisiana with a part of New Mexico, and the internal part of Louisiana. With a lot of attention for the Native Amrican tribes. Zebulon Montgomery Pike (1779-1813) was an American brigadier general and explorer for whom Pikes Peak in Colorado was named. As a U.S. Army officer he led two expeditions through the new Louisiana Purchase territory.
An unusually well-preserved copy. With a nice pictorial private bookplate of C.W. and N.M. Wiegel. C.W. (Nellie) Wiegel (dates unknown) was an activist for the cause of the Native Americans in 1920s and '30s.
