The okimono represents a man, standing on a rock and holding a partially unwound scrool extended between his two hands, with a dragon above his head and left shoulder.
The head of the dragon seems resting on a small cushion of clouds laid on the man's head. Some clouds hide part of his tail, so as to comply with the belief that one cannot see a dragon in its whole without dying immediately.
The tip of the tail of the dragon seems to be pointing at the unwound scroll. A second rolled scroll is figured between the feet of the man.
This ensemble reminds of the legend stating that it was the dragons that conveyed to Nagarjuna the most important text of the doctrines of the Mahayana, the buddhism of Greater Vehicle.
Signed Masa-Yuki on the underside. The piece is extremely well carved, with great finesse in the details (expression and clothing of the man, details of the hands and feet, scales and posture of the dragon, its three claws legs, fluffyness of the small clouds..)
End of 19th century - C.1885
