Gabriel Fourmaintraux was the only potter to have trained at the école de Sèvres (pottery site), he threw himself into the production of hard porcelain in Desvres.
For about twenty years, from 1909 to around 1929, he created all kids of decorative objects, of European or Asian influence: vases, plates, inkwells... especially mushroom lamps, Berger lamps, miniatures.
It was a great success, especially exports, however, this expensive production was halted by the revaluation of the franc and the advent of Art Deco in 1925 and stopped by the financial crisis in the 1930s. Since then, the Gabriel Fourmaintraux factory dedicated itself exclusively to faience and stopped producing porcelain permanently; this was an episode in the history of desvroise ceramics.
