The painting is in good condition and has been recently cleaned. The original gold-plated frame in good condition. The frame was professionally restored on the bottom right. (See photo 14.)
The Dutch painter James de Rijk was born on 17 May 1806 in Hilversum and died there on 10 November 1882. He was a lithographer, painter and draughtsman. James was married to the artist Anna van Delden (1808-1895). He was a pupil of Jan van Ravenswaay (1789-1869) and Johannes van Ravenswaay (1815-1849). James taught aan Cornelis Bijlard, Helmert Richard van der Flier, Christianus Hendricus Hein, Hendrik Jan Hein, Lion Schulman, Ferdinand Hendrik Sijpkens and Joannes de Waal Malefijt. James was a member of the royal academy in Amsterdam, the society 'Hierdoor tot Hooger' in Rotterdam and the society 'Arti Sacrum' in Rotterdam. James mainly painted scenes with landscapes, beach views, animal scenes, figure scenes and still lifes. James is best known as a painter of cattle. His work is on display in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, Teylers Stichting Haarlem, Museum Boymans-van Beuningen Rotterdam, Rijksprentenkabinet Amsterdam, Rijksprentenkabinet Leiden, Rijksmuseum Kröller-Müller in Otterlo, Rijksmuseum Twenthe and Goois Museum Hilversum.
