In my first screen prints, I wanted to retain a comic strip design, even if it was just a sequence of two images. After "De nacht dat Franka Furora ontmoette", this "de Nacht van de wapensmokkelaars" was also designed as such. In the small intro plate, Franka works undercover as a waitress in a seedy boxing joint. Apparently, she hears enough there to witness arms smuggling in the large plate. A dark scrap scene in a deserted corner of the port - is Franka making too much noise, will the smugglers hear her?
I drew this black and white plate for the Hasselt comic shop Wonderland, which released it in a cover with an information sheet.
Franka is a prototype in this plate from 1985 of what I envisioned for the Cadillac Club (which followed in 1988): a more mature Franka in a film noir entourage. This is extensively discussed in the Collector’s edition of CHROOM.
The winner of this lot will also receive the special print, made for this auction in an edition of 150 unnumbered copies, in colour in A4 size, signed by Henk Kuijpers (see final image).
