Superbly crafted a top of impeccably selected spruce of fine to medium fine grain. Very mildly arched mostly flat which helps in tonal projection. The back is a gorgeous two piece highly figured maple exceptionally bookmatched. The sides neck and delicately carved scroll are of similar figure to the back. Ebony fingerboard and fittings, pegs tailpiece and chinrest with single E fine tuner. Spruce French cut bridge perfectly fitted bearing no marks Aubert or otherwise but of fine grain nevertheless.
The instrument is light in weight indicating the years of drying before construction and subsequent nearly 150 years of its life. The tone is soloist in nature its power and projection able to soar through an orchestra or accompanying piano but also able to produce wonderful soft tonal colours. The overtones carry nicely. Overall the tone is warmer and full, robust and noticeable. Response is very quick. It is exceptionally easy to play with no effort needed to produce gorgeous melodies in every position and on all stings, it’s even and well balanced. Harmonica are clear and resonant, natural and artificial. Double stops are effortlessly executed on this masterful fiddle. The purffling is indicative of the French style flatter than its italian counterparts but nevertheless equally beautifully inlaid. The f holes are bold and robust no cracks or open seams to be seen anywhere; back, top, sides or anywhere in between. The varnish is a gorgeous light oil varnish true to the French school a gorgeous golden brown lightly applied over a yellowish almost orange base of course there are signs of ware on the scroll; back and top. And minor dings and scratches elsewhere from many years being played by many countless players.
