This Lobi head had the same function as the figures and was placed on family altars in the Thilda, a small family shrine. The head represent a spirit named tibil thil. It is used as a family protection against illness and for well being. The heads are also used for divination; and receive then offerings. The shrines are trans generational and give social status when passed on from father to son. After a few generation the accumulation of figures in the shrine can become quite impressive.
This head carved with great care and attention to detail, has some insect damages, and is coming from the known expert Robert Van Der Heijden in Amsterdam.

David Norden is a third generation antique dealers, dealing in African Art in Antwerp-Belgium since 1992.
I do not buy directly from Africa, and try to avoid objects made only for decoration. Nearly all the objects I sell are 50 years or older. My objects are coming from private and known collections, small and big auction houses from around the world, from exchanges with other collectors, or from other dealers.
I favor figurative masks and figures, and fine quality of carvings with good age.
All lots from David Norden's collection are sold with a written description of the tribe and David Norden private opinion .
All lots may be viewed or picked up in David Norden's African Antiques Art Gallery in Antwerp.
