Edgar Chahine (in armenian Էդգար Շահին), born 1874 in Vienna, Austria, is a French painter and engraver of Armenian descent who died in 1947 in Paris.

Edgar Chahine began his studies in Constantinople, where his father was one of the directors of the Ottoman bank. His teacher is the painter Milkon Tiratzuyan, who advises him to continue his artistic training in Italy. In 1892, he was a student in Venice of a high school run by the Mekhitartist brothers, and at the same time he attended the classes of the painter Antonio Paoletti and the sculptor Antonio del Zotto at the Academy of Fine Arts.
He settled permanently in Paris in 1895. He enrolled at the Julian Academy, then exhibited at the Society of French Artists from 1896 to 1899 including the ‘La vie lamentable’ series, paintings featuring the disinherited. As early as 1897, his engraving ‘Étude de gueux’, exhibited in the gallery of the Bodinière, was noticed by the critic Loÿs Delteil and the print merchant Edmond Sagot. In 1900, thanks to his engravings, he was awarded a gold medal at the Paris World's Fair, and in 1903 another one at the Venice Biennale, an event that paid him a retrospective tribute in 1924. Naturalised French in 1925, he was awarded the Legion of honour in 1932.
After somewhat shifting from oil painting to etching, he began to use tempera in 1933. His first illustrated book was Anatole France's ‘Histoire comique’ (1905). Later, he will illustrate works by Octave Mirbeau, Gabriel Mourey, Colette, Gustave Flaubert, Jules and Edmond de Goncourt or Paul Verlaine.
He left a large work of 450 engravings, 430 illustrations and 300 paintings, pastels and drawings.

  • Very fast and professionally packed. S&H charges were a bit higher than usual but over all great painting for a reasonable price. New but successful vendor.
