The Bavarian EG 2 was an electric locomotive of the Königlich Bayerischen Staatseisenbahnen (K.Bay.Sts.B) that was deployed for freight trains on the route between Freilassing and Berchtesgaden. It was deployed with the Deutsche Reichsbahn as the series BR E702 and followed other locomotives in the Series BR E70, such as the Prussian EC 502 - EC 505 and Prussian EC 507 and EC 508, which were then classified with the DRG as the E70 series.
Development and deployment:
The route Salzburg - Freilassing - Berchtesgaden was electrified between 1912 and 1914. In 1913 the Königlich Bayerischen Staatseisenbahnen (K. Bay. Sts. B) ordered a number of test locomotives for this route, including the Bavarian EG-2. However, the construction of the locomotive was delayed by the outbreak of the 1st World War. As a result, the two locomotives were only delivered in 1920. In 1926, these locomotives were then deployed with the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DRG) as a Series BR E702 and were assigned the Company Numbers E70 21 and E70 22. After the 2nd World War, both locomotives entered service with the Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB). The locomotives were nicknamed the "Bavarian Crocodile". The locomotive is built on two bogies with an articulated chassis and buffer beams, however, the front housing covering the drivetrains is attached to the centre housing. Powered via blind axles and the typical triangular connecting rods.
Both locomotives were deployed with the Deutsche Bundesbahn until 1950 and 1951 after which they were decommissioned. Unfortunately, all units of the Bavarian EG 2 were scrapped.
