A Franco-Crosti boiler is a traditional locomotive boiler with a second boiler downstream.
This pre-heats the feed-water using exhaust gas flow (an exhaust pre-heater).
This second boiler is located under the main boiler.
The idea here was to achieve a 20% saving on coal consumption.
The appearance of the two flat smokestacks on either side of the boiler is quite remarkable.
The pre-heater was rather prone to corrosion and despite better efficiencies the costs once more ran out of control.
