G.N. Wright/Thomas Allom, Eugene Lami - France Illustrated - 1841

G.N. Wright/Thomas Allom, Eugene Lami - France Illustrated - 1841
Illustrated, Topography - Quantity: 2

Londen, | Paris: Fisher, son, & co, 4 parts in 2 Vols 4to (22 × 27.2 cm), probably first edition (1841-1845), illustrated with 132 steel engravings, 96 in the first three parts, by Thomas Allom; the fourth part contains 36 engravings of Eugène Lami. Beautiful half-leather binding. The fourth part, which is often missing, is the translation of Summer in Paris, Jules Janin. The first part contains many scenes from the Pyrenees, which were very fashionable at the time. Another volume contains many scenes of the Loire (Saumur, Angers, Amboise...). The book aims to merge everything that is remarkable in France, both from an architectural point of view and landscape, illustrating the historical and descriptive text. The beautiful illustrations depict, among other things, Château de Pau, the Pantheon, the Circus Gavarni and the Cathedral of Orleans. The interesting thing is that the trends of that time are well represented in these engravings of the people in contemporary costumes.
The condition of the books is good, in a half-leather red binding with marbled boards. The bookblock is firmly attached to the binding. The plates show foxing, as is not unusual with steel engravings; see pictures.
Weight: 3900 g
