Mainline History: By the early 1950s the freight transport volumes had grown to such an extent that the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) needed to develop a new locomotive that was powerful, fast, and above all - light. The locomotive had to be able to deal with the increased freight traffic on the Gotthard route, and replace the outdated Ae 4/6, Ae 4/7 Ae and the Ce 6/8 II, which for the heavy freight trains, had to be used in double traction on that route.
The design specification for the Ae 6/6, was for a 6-axled (2 bogies each with 3 axles) Swiss locomotive with an axle configuration of Co’Co’ with a power output of 4400 kW and a maximum speed of 125 km/h. A total of 120 units of this powerful locomotive were built. The first 25 locomotives were done out with the coats-of-arms of the Swiss cantons, the other locomotives were done out in the coats-of-arms of Swiss municipalities. Ornamental stripes are/were only painted onto the locomotives 11401-11425 of this series that used the name of a canton.
