Grandson of Louis Napoleon the King of Holland.
During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871, the imperial family fled France and received permission from Queen Victoria to settle in Chislehurst. He completed the military academy in Woolwich. His father Napoleon III died in 1873, he is successor to the throne and head of the family. In order to have a better shot at the French crown, he participated in the English expedition to Zululand. He was pierced there by the Zulus with 18 spears.
