Oil on panel - Hand signed - 1984

Adriano Tuninetto was born in Pancalieri in May 1930 and died in Turin in 2004. Not much famous in our country, he probably emigrated to Turin during the Fascist period. He began painting at the age of 13, interested in capturing the peculiarities of things and faces, enhancing and sometimes distorting them. In 1955 he won the “Premio Pirelli” for painting and in 1956 he participated in a solo exhibition at “Centro Culturale Pirelli”, Milan. Considered one of the best artists in the Turin area, he was attracted by Informalism and made abstract works, without geometric representations: the oil paintings initially avoided strong chromatic contrasts and explored the expressive possibilities of slight colour variations. Since the 1960s he became interested in action painting, a painting style where colours drip spontaneously, thrown or stained on the canvasses, large brush strokes of colour pass through the paintings, meet and then change direction; for this long phase of experiments, Adriano Tuninetto was considered by several critics a real exponent of gestural art in Italy. In Turin he had his studio in Via San Donato. His research in the field of ceramics was important: in the early 1970s he made many dishes at the Besio factory in Mondovì, to continue with “plates”, “vases-landscapes”, “monoliths” and the famous “heads”. In the same period he made experiments with glass processing: the melting of glass at 900° allowed him to obtain the plastic movement of surfaces: thus, he created the “verox” with varied conglomerations of different materials. In addition to the many solo and group exhibitions from the 1950s to the beginning of this century, his works are kept in the collections of many museums: National Museum of Cinema, Turin; Museum of glass, Altare; Municipal museum, Torre Pellice; Municipal museum, Alessandria, Museum of Fine Art, Volgograd (Russia).
