* Rare brochure from Van Hoëvell, written in response to a military expedition against Buleleng that had taken place shortly before that. Now that that area is reduced (or perhaps we should say 'conquered'), it is time to examine the blessings that the Dutch authority could bring here. For Van Hoëvell, who was originally a preacher (but of the humane kind), the spread of Christianity could play an important role in this. At the same time he provides us with one of the earliest descriptions of the island and it is not surprising that he opposes the existing habits of keeping slaves and, above all, the still current practice of burning widows, often much younger than their deceased husbands.
