Kokeshi are wooden handmade artisanal dolls from Japan. The most prevalent theory is that they appeared during the Tempo period (1830 - 1843) of the Edo era (1603 - 1868) in the mountainous Tohoku region.
Short biography of FUKUJU YUSA (1930 – 2001):
Yusa was born in 1930 in Miyagi Prefecture and comes from a strong Narugo kokeshi family. His master was Takahishi Sakari. As a result, his early work were Narugo kokeshi. This changed in the 1950s when he started making sosaku kokeshi. In 1960, at the age of 30, he won the prestigious Prime Minister Award for the sosaku kokeshi offered in this lot! This work is titled Hoshu, treasure. Yusa passed away in 2001.
