Description
Virgil Solis ( 1514 - 1562 ) - A large renaissance palace
Woodcut - Plate signed - Ca; 1560

This is a woodcut from the rather rare Dutch edition of the renowned Virgil Solis Bible. A strong impression.

Virgil Solis framed his woodcuts with a cartouche of fine scrolling in Renaissance style. They appeared already in 1561 in a Luther Bible published by Feyerabend and reused by Birckman in for his Bible in the Brabant language for the Southern Netherlands in 1565.

Dutch text printed in Gothic letters beneath the woodcut and on the backside of the sheet.

Virgil Solis (1514-1562)
Also called Virgilius the old. Born in Nuremberg and known for its beautiful woodcut illustrations.
