Beautiful zoomorphic circumcision owl mask - GOMA -BEMBE.
Called ‘Eluba ya butende na cwecwe’, these masks used to be worn during the circumcision rites of young men.
‘The animal dominating the heights of the forest, master of death, is the owl’ (cwecwe: generic term). Its mask will particularly protect the circumcised batende from the poisonous gaze of sorcerers.
