19th century carved wooden sculpture on guéridon, depicting the divine hero Heracles from Greek mythology fighting the multiple-headed water monster Hydra of Lerna.
Herakles defeated Hydra with the help of his cousin Lolaos, it forms the second of his famous twelve works.
In Greek and Roman antiquity, but also from the Renaissance, the works of Hercules were a popular subject within the arts. Famous artists like Antonio del Pollaiolo (1475), Lucas Cranach the Elder (after 1537), Giambologna (ca. 1570-1580),
Adriaen de Vries (1596-1602), François Joseph Bosio (1824) and Edmund von Hofmann (1893) have perpetuated the theme of Hercules and Hydra.
The sculpture presents the athletic hero in a dynamic pose with his arms raised above his head, ready to beat the monster with his club. The sculpture is mounted on an octagonal guéridon whose foot is depicted as a tree trunk that extends into three dolphins.
The ensemble is presumably manufactured in Southern Germany or Northern Italy.
It is in original condition; there are some small pieces missing here and there and the wood has some shrinkage cracks, please see the photos.
