Germany - Helmet - 1915

Germany - Helmet - 1915
Original - Leather - Excellent

This is a Model 1915 Pickelhaube ( M1915 ). This model of Pickelhaube was first introduced in June 1915 and Bavaria followed suit in November of that same year. The bright steel and brass fittings of pre-war helmets had proved to be a liability to the wearer in warfare. The bright highly visible fitting were replaced with anodised, non reflective grey steel fittings. In an effort to further reduce the visibility of the wearer, the spike could also be removed and replaced at will. The mechanism for this is clearly illustrated. I would say that the helmet is in excellent age appropriate condition. It was recovered from the battlefield at some point during WW1. At the time I was given the helmet, quite a number of decades ago, I was told that it had been taken after conflict with a Bavarian artilley regiment. There is some surface scuffing and crazing to the leather of the helmet, the leather however is in excellent flexible condition having been treated periodically with an appropriate leather oil. One of the helmet side posts ( cockades ) should be a simple black and white, however both have the same colouring, this replacement is in all probability a replacement too hand at the time. All metalwork is in first rate condition and has never been cleaned. The internal leather liner of the helmet is in excellent undamaged condition but a tad grubby. I am sure the accompanying images will illustrate any information I may not have provided. The Pickelhaube wil be shipped to its new owner Tracked/Signed for.
