Stunning glass item designed by master designer Tapioche Wirkkala.
This model, called "Inari," has been included in the littala catalogues from 1967 to 1981, see Marianne Aav (edited by) Tapio Wirkkala. Eye, Hand and thought, exhibition catalogue, Museum of Art and Design, Helsinki, 2001, p. 315, model no.3543. See also Marianne Aav and Eeva Viljanen, Iittala: 125 years of Finnish glass, Stuttgart 2006, p. 248.
Using a combination of techniques, a blown shaped from a mould has been then partially cut, Wirkkala plays with the similarity between glass and ice. Inari is an area far north of Finland, and a centre of the Sami culture. Lake Inari runs in the Arctic Ocean and remains frozen from November to May.
The glass is in perfect condition, as per photos.
The glass bears artist’s signature and model number on the base.
