Mask (1) - Wood - Ngil - West Africa
2nd half 20th century - Excellent condition, barely used with minimal signs of wear

Beautiful Fang mask. The Fang is a tribe with a fairly large territory in West Africa. They are known for their carvings in particular. The typical masks were worn by men who moved from village to village as peacekeepers. This mask was meant to protect them against danger. They were also worn during the initiation of new tribesmen and the persecution of criminals. Men wearing these masks appeared in the village after sunset, when it was dark. Delivered incl. stand.
