This sextant is like new and neatly stored in his wooden box. The manufacturer is Observator Rotterdam (Hoogvliet). Serial number 877006. This is the 6th sextant made in 1977. The sextants were completely manually manufactured in small series. Made to high standards and perfectly solidly finished.
This sextant is made for Captain Dirk Postumus, commander of the S.S. Statendam, a cruise ship of the Holland America Line (HAL). On the box there is a brass plate with inscription.
Made of saltwater resistant bronze, dyed with a layer of beige powder coating. Has a scale of ca. 25cm and measures from -5 to 120 degrees. The nonius has a subdivision in minutes. The mirrors are perfect. The index mirror is perpendicular on the scale. The horizon mirror is semi-mirrored. There are four index and 3 horizon filters. The fixed viewfinder is of the Galilei type and magnifies by approx. 4 x. The viewfinder is custom-made, of high quality and manufactured by Hensoldt Wetzlar Optical Anstalt (Zeiss Oberkochen concern). Angle of view is 9 degrees. Dioptre setting runs well.
The heavy sextant is wrapped in a beautiful wooden box, which also includes a screwdriver, adjusting pen and oil bottle. There is an original calibration certificate from March 1977. For actual use it is advised to calibrate the sextant by an expert.
