2015 Château Marchesseau, Lalande-de-Pomerol (Silver Medal)
Vintage 2015 Score Bordeaux, Red 18/20
Info Lalande de Pomerol:
AOC Lalande de Pomerol is located north of its renowned neighbor Pomerol, just across the small river Barbanne. This region has 1120 hectares of vineyards and, like in the Pomerol, has small wineries, and the wine price is on the higher side, although not as high as in Pomerol. The grape variety Merlot is here the dominant variety with a planting of 75%. The soil varies from sand to pebbles and clay, but especially the areas with pebbles and clay bring the best wines that are comparable to Pomerol. These wines also have the potential to grow old and have a rich, full velvety texture with a beautiful bouquet.
Description of the vintage 2015 Bordeaux :
After a series of correct, average or poor vintages since the excellent 2009 and 2010, Bordeaux finally holds a new great vintage with 2015. All conditions that contribute to a great year of red wines in Bordeaux were met:
Early and relatively fast flowering and fruit set to ensure good fertilization and predispose to a homogeneous maturity
a hot July and dry, causing the slowdown then the final stop of the growth of the vine before veraison. The heavy winter rains had created sufficient reserves to prevent the vines from suffering too much during a hot summer, but with less heat in its peaks than in 2003 or 2009
a complete ripening of the different varieties thanks to the months of August and September quite dry, but without excessive heat
good weather, moderately hot and weakly watered during the harvest, allowing to wait for the optimum maturity of each plot without fear of dilution or decay. Merlots have often reached 14 ° and cabernets 13 °. The sanitary condition was absolutely perfect with higher acidities than in the other very hot vintages of the region (2003 and 2009 for example) with thick and ripe skins.
Finally, a beautiful noble and early rot in Sauternes and Barsac (with good rains in the second half of September) allowed to produce very sweet, clean and pure, combining freshness, richness and elegance. The sugar content is very high and the aromatic intensity quite exceptional.
Vintage description 1996 Bordeaux score : 17/20
An outstanding vintage both in quality and quantity. The Cabernet Sauvignon has matured to perfection and produced highly concentrated wines. Most of the Médoc wines are full, ample, aromatic with a long cellaring capacity. However, the Merlot suffered from the torrential rains during the summer. Consequently the Pomerols, Saint Emilions and Graves are not quite so regular. The dry white wines are magnificently complex thanks to an early harvest. The sweet wines are outstandingly rich.
