Middelburg 1804 - 1877 Middelburg
The Zeeland-based painter Cornelis Kimmel lived and worked in Middelburg for almost his entire life. He was trained as an artist at the Drawing Academy, of which he later would become director, and was subsequently taught by marine painter Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek. He was then taught painting at the studio of the Ghent history painter Pieter van Hanselaere. Kimmel specialised in summer and winter landscapes and of winter scenes with skaters, which was a popular genre in the first half of the 19th century. He also made posters.
Museums: Work in, among others, the Zeeland Museum in Middelburg.
