This “Cihongo” mask is the masculine counterpart of the Mwana Pwo mask.
The Ci Hongo is the representation of a masculine spirit, evoking power and wealth. This is the spirit of a notable, it is supposed to bring prosperity to the village and renders justice. Originally, only the chief and his son could wear this mask.
With scarifications representing tears, which we can also find on the “beautiful woman” Mwana Pwo masks.
