- F.A. Liefrinck - Bali en Lombok. Geschriften van F.A. Lieftinck. Met een inleiding van Prof. J.C. van Eerde. - Amsterdam, J.H.de Bussy, 1927. VIII, 542 pp. - Bound in the original cloth publisher's binding (22.5 × 16.5 cm).

- F.A. Liefrinck (1853-1927) was an East Indian civil servant with the Netherlands Indies Civil Administration who spent 15 years of his career in Bali at the end of the 19th century. In this period the island was actually colonised only in name and not de facto, and hardly explored. The meticulous and studious Liefrinck changed this with his extensive reports to the leadership of the Government, in which he discussed in detail the way in which the local government was organised, the composition of the village councils, the distribution of land and the methods of agriculture - mainly rice - etc., marriages and cremations, etc. etc. etc. In short, at the end of the 19th century he was the most important Bali expert. These voluminous reports were published, partly in his lifetime, in magazines such as the one of the Bataviaasch Genootschap, and are collected in this publication. One of the contributions (28 pp.) is about slavery in Lombok which was still fairly common there, certainly until 1896. In 1905 he was sent to Bali again to mediate in the conflict between the Dutch government and the rulers of Badung and Tabanan; after the failure of that mediation attempt he participated as government commissioner in the well-known military expedition against South Bali in September 1906, which ended in the collective suicide ('Puputan') of 400 Balinese people (but perhaps there were many more) which confirmed the Dutch rule on Bali until 1942.
Condition: virtually as new. In the back of the book is a loose envelope addressed to the famous adat expert Prof. Mr. C.[ornelis] van Vollenhoven to whom this copy may have belonged.
