Beautiful painting by the Rotterdam painter Jan de Jong (1863-1901) of figures in traditional costume, Zeeland, on a quay near the harbour. Most probably in Veere, if I correctly interpret the contours of the church in the background. The painting is signed in the lower right corner and dated '97 (1897).
The painting has some cracks, which are not disturbing. Furthermore, a cleaning would be recommended.
Jan de Jong was a Rotterdam artist who spent his entire life in his home town. In addition, he regularly painted Zeeland subjects. His oeuvre consists mainly of landscapes, crowded townscapes and folk figures.
Unfortunately, this little master is only 38 years old!
