A protective deity, Thouéris assists women giving birth alongside the god Bès, but also the deceased destined to be reborn in the world of the dead. Its general appearance is that of the hippopotamus, borrowing from the woman her standing position, her arms and her drooping breasts; its paws are those of a lion. A crocodile tail (meseh) descends along the back.

As a protective goddess, Taweret assists women giving birth alongside the god Bes, but also the dead destined to be reborn in the Other World.
