Dance mask (1) - Wood - Punu - West-Afrika

Description
Dance mask (1) - Wood - Punu - West-Afrika
2nd half 20th century - Good condition, used with some signs of wear

Private collection.
This mask is a variant of white masks, spread in the west and centre of Gabon, purchased in Fougamou in 1969, currently, these masks mainly appear to entertain the crowd on the occasion of festivities. During their appearances, the dancers would wear an outfit in raffia and cotton fabric, and would skilfully move on stilts which could reach two metres. Idealised feminine faces, the high hairdo with side braids reminds the hairstyles of the early 20th century.
