Original woodblock print, Gepubliceerd door Unsodo - Kasamatsu Shiro (1898–1991) - "Asa no nami" 朝の波 (Morning Waves) - Heisei periode (1989–2019)

Shiro studied art with Kaburagi Kiyokata. He created his first woodblock print designs for Watanabe Shozaburo in 1919. Shiro designed shin-hanga prints for Watanabe for a long period of time, and became famous for his romantic landscapes and images of traditional Japanese life. Between 1952 and 1960 he also created over 100 woodblock-print designs for Kyoto publisher Unsodo. Shiro is generally regarded as one of the top-notch shin-hanga woodblock print artists in Japan.

Commentary: Very striking morning view of boats sailing out while the sun rises. A purplish mist hangs above the deep blue-green water. The orange-yellow sun reflects on the water. A bold shin-hanga design with very pretty bokashi shading.

There is a small notch at the bottom right corner (outside of the woodblock print). This is the so-called "Kento", which is characteristic for the publisher Unsodo when found in this spot. Kento is the registration system that is traditionally used by Japanese makers of woodblock prints to ensure that the different colours are well aligned (each colour is applied separately using a separate woodblock).

Signed - Shiro, on the bottom right of the art print, with red seal

Published - Unsodo, publisher's seal in the left margin

First edition in 1956. This is a later edition, printed with the original woodblocks.

Measurements of the entire paper: 41 x 28 cm
Measurements of the image: 36.5 x 24 cm

The woodblock print is in good condition, except for the horizontal fold that runs straight through the middle (see photo 14 and 15). This is not really noticeable at the front (photo 14), and this will not be disturbing inside a frame. Needless to say, this is only my opinion. Please view the photos for the details.

The woodblock print will be shipped by registered post, in sturdy cardboard packaging.
