Mailly was first a professor of history at the College of Godrans in Dijon, then a bookseller in Dijon. He went bankrupt in 1792 and became librarian of Dijon College. According to Mailly the Fronde represented a politically dangerous revolutionary attempt as it undermined the foundations of the Monarchy. A young Louis XIV came out of the trials married and hardened. He had measured the treachery of the nobles and the versatility of the people. Until he took power in 1661, he had considered a political organization aiming to counter the nobles of the kingdom.
