Hendricus Antonius Josephus Maria (‘Hendrik’) de Laat, born on 2 January 1900 and died on 22 April 1980 in 's-Hertogenbosch. At the age of 11, Hendrik followed the evening course with Frans Kops, he took drawing and painting with Barend Bouwmeester from 1915-1917, Frans Kops, Piet Slager Jr. and André Verhorst. At the age of 16, he won two first prizes, one for drawing and one for painting. He opened his first exhibition on 24 September 1921.
In 1922, he attended private lessons in drawing and painting with Frans Slager and Piet Slager. And he attended courses with Julien Dony.
His work style had the characteristics of the Hague school whom he greatly admired. He also has great affinity with Johannes Bosboom, Paul Gabriel and Anton Mauve.
