Description
Hellem - 8 cup coffee maker + accessory. - Pirex glass
France - First half 20th century

Coffee maker with capacity of 8 cups, fair size. The base is in chromed metal and glass paste while the globes are made of pyrex glass. The stove is powered by alcohol, the metal accessory to support the top of the machine, before pouring the coffee, was purchased separately.
Vacuum system, consisting of two linked glass spheres, with cork and filter. The steam pressure drives the water up in the lower flask, until it mixes with the coffee powder contained in the upper flask. When the alcohol burner is removed, the air in the lower flask cools down, creating a vacuum that immediately sucks down the coffee infusion from the upper flask through a filter that holds the grounds. Once removed the upper bowl, the coffee pot can be handled thanks to a suitable support for pouring the coffee in the cups.
