Who was Johan Dijkstra:
Johan Dijkstra (Groningen, 23 December 1896 – Groningen, 21 February 1978) was a Dutch artist. He is considered to be one of the most important Groningen artists of the twentieth century. Together with Jan Altink, he founded the Groningen art circle De Ploeg in 1918. It was only in 1924 that he converted to expressionism. In 1926, he became a teacher for a drawing association of Groningen students. As a result of this, he had room to make free work that consisted of paintings and some sculptures. He also made decor designs at staged musical performances, organised by composer Daniël Ruyneman. His first artistic example was Vincent van Gogh. He painted images of the rural and urban life of Groningen and portraits of other Ploeg members.
