Commemorative head, terracotta, Oba Wei from a family collection. This room was obtained in situ in 1991.
The Ifé art is the only one in Africa presenting anthropomorphic or zoomorphic representations with such a realism.
It is of such high artistic quality that it was often compared with other great naturalist of ancient Greece and Rome cultures.
The tradition reported that long ago in Benin there was a custom to decapitate defeated kings and to offer their head to the Oba who forwarded it to the bronze smith artisans.
It flowed as the representation of the heads of those who had offered the strongest resistance.
When the son of a defeated ruler ascended on the throne, the Oba sent him a bronze replica of his father’s head as a warning.
