CHP Jewelry Collection - Gijs Bakker Projects

Gijs Bakker (1942) is a renowned Dutch jewellery and industrial designer. In 1996, Bakker co-founded ‘chp…?’ , which will cease to exist after 23 years. With this auction the public will have a chance to obtain a piece from a remarkable collection.

About CHP Jewelry Collection - Gijs Bakker Projects

Gijs Bakker wanted to show the international design world that a piece of jewellery is more than a decorative fashion accessory. For ‘chp…?’, originality of the concept is central to the design and is supported by a fitting choice of material and technology.
By showing that jewellery design evolves just like any other design discipline, ‘chp…?’ fills an existing void by making designer jewelry more widely accessible. ‘chp…?’ invited internationally acclaimed designers to create special pieces for the collection. All first prototypes ever made of designs for ‘chp…?’ are in the collection of the Design Museum Den Bosch. After 23 years ‘chp…?’ will cease to exist and with this auction the public will have a chance to obtain a piece from a remarkable collection.

A chain of prayer beads is not a jewel. But by intertwining the chains of Catholics, Muslims and Buddhists (rosary, tespi, juzu and mala) and dying them blood-red, this becomes a wearable and meaningful piece of jewellery.

Katja Prins (Haarlem, the Netherlands, 1970) lives and works as a jewelry designer in Amsterdam. She graduated at the Polytechnic Schoonhoven in 1993 and at the jewelry department of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam in 1997. As a jeweler she is working with silver, plastic, glass, porcelain and polyurethane rubber, creating unique pieces. She was a guest lecturer at Rietveld Academy Amsterdam, Academie Beeldende Kunsten Maastricht, AKI Enschede, Konstfack Stockholm, Hiko Mizuno College, Tokyo, Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, Savannah College of Art and Design, Tainan National University of the Arts, Massachusetts College of Art, Boston and University of Arts & Design Samara, Russia.

Her jewelry is purchased by Museum of Arts and Design New York, Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, Schmuckmuseum Pforzheim, CODA Museum Apeldoorn, Museum for Modern Art Arnhem, Textile Museum Tilburg, Mint Museum Charlotte, Glasmuseum Alter Hof Herding, Nationaal Glas Museum Leerdam. SM’s Stedelijk Museum ‘s Hertogenbosch and Musée des Beaux Arts Marseille.
