Iginga Bwami Statue - Lega - Congo DRC

Iginga Bwami Statue - Lega - Congo DRC
Mid 20th century - Vintage - used with visible signs of wear

28 cm.
Former Campagna Collection, Italy.

Lega art must be understood in relation with the Bwami, a non-secret society which rules the social and political lives of the Lega. The initiation to the Bwami takes a long time, it is complex and marked out with initiatory rites, to which are related moral values, represented by statuettes.
Each figurine has a name and refers to a story.
This one is related to the aphorism of adultery, which must be avoided. Men and women must be virtuous.

Cf. Éthique et beauté Lega au coeur de l'Afrique, Biebuyck.
Cf. Warega, L. Perrois, 1999.

Shipment within 24 working hours.
