The name ‘alidade’ comes from Arabic.
Before Arab astronomy spread to late medieval Europe, the ‘alidade’ was called ‘diottra’ (from the Greek “dia” = “through” and “opteyo” = “to observe”, from which ‘dioptre’ - instrument through which something is observed).
The term ‘alidade’ originally designated a revolving small rod with levels, centred in a goniometric scale drawn on the front or back flat face of many ancient astronomical and topographical instruments: dials, flat astrolabes, graphometers and so on.
Into the alidade there are two vanes (or pinnules), fixed perpendicularly on the circle of the alidade itself, which allows to aim at or watch an object that is a reference point on the coast, (e.g. a bell tower) through the holes made in them.
The vane has a narrow slit to which the eye is placed and through which the observation is carried out.
A prism allows you to read the value of the bearing on the compass.
An index, often made of the edge of the alidade itself, shows on a goniometric scale (azimuthal circle), the angle (azimuth) between the line of sight of the targeted object and a predetermined direction.

Body to be repainted.
