Description
Sculpture - Gothic - oak with polychrome paint & gilding - Early 16th century
Hispano Flamenco

A beautiful Hispano-Flamenco retable element in oak with the original polychrome paint and gilding with "sgraffito" decoration. Christ is depicted as a 12 year old boy, seated on a gothic throne with linenfold panels, gesturing his hands to point out stages in a debate or verses from the Bible.

The scene depicts the last incident of Jesus’ childhood recorded in the Bible. Leaving Jerusalem after celebrating the Passover feast, Joseph and Mary discovered that Jesus was not in the caravan. Returning and searching for three days, they found the boy in scholarly dispute in the temple.

Early 16th century.
