Roberto ‘HANDS OF STONE’ Durán and Thomas ‘HITMAN’ Hearns hand signed this incredible 8 x 10 photograph that portrays the 1984 fight between them in the Caesars Palace hotel/casino. The item comes with a Beckett certificate to guarantee the authenticity of both boxers’ signature.
It has been 35 years since that distant 15 June 1984. Thomas ‘Hitman’ Hearns had crowned in 1982 after defeating by majority decision Puerto Rican Wilfred Benitez. Following this victory, Hearns claimed two unanimous-decision victories over the little-known Murray Sutherland and Luigi Minchillo. Many wondered if Hearns could become as dominant again as he was in the 147 lb. He had won all his fights in that class until Sugar Ray Leonard defeated him by technical knockout in round 14, while he was ahead on the cards.
For his part, Roberto ‘Hands of Stone’ Durán reached this fight after a spectacular battle in a higher weight class against Marvin ‘Marvelous’ Hagler, a legend and one of the best middleweight boxers of all time. In this fight Duran showed how great he is, reaching a very tight decision. In addition to that, his record was 75 wins and only 5 defeats, 1 of them by technical knockout against Leonard (the well-known ‘no más’). Durán was back at the 154 lb, where he had already been champion by defeating Davey Moore.
Everything was ready to see one of the most even fights in history, or at least that's what was believed. From the beginning of the bout, Hearns clearly dominated the boxer who perhaps created more problems to both Leonard and Hagler (and defeated the first of them once). The fight is remembered as the only time in Roberto Duran's life when he was so spectacularly knocked out. Hearns, who had already floored the challenger twice in the first round, had no mercy in the second round and with a straight to the jaw floored this Latin American boxing legend as a cut tree.
After this victory, Hearns managed to establish himself as a great champion and as one of the best champions of the 154 lb class in the history of boxing.
