SHV 1896-1996 (Think Book)
Irma Boom and Johan Pijnappel
Utrecht, SHV Holdings NV, 1996
2,136 unnumbered pages, steel spine, eight ribbon bookmarks, 18 × 23 × 11 cm, 3.5 kg
The SHV book was published 20 years ago at the centenary of SHV and is one of the most spectacular books ever published in the world. Art historian Johan Pijnappel and designer Irma Boom worked on the book for five years, full-time, and it has been described as “one of the craziest adventures ever had with paper, ink and a printing press”. The book has more than two thousand pages, is 11 centimetres thick and weighs three and a half kilograms. Partly because of the numerous, and sometimes hidden, graphic strikes of genius included in the book by Irma Boom, it was awarded numerous prizes at home and abroad. The 11-centimetre-thick edges show a flowering tulip field from one angle, while from another angle a poem by Gerrit Achterberg is visible. While leafing, looking and reading, the reader makes connections and thus reconstructs the one hundreds years of history of the Steenkolen Handelsvereniging. The eight ribbon bookmarks are a welcome tool. A monumental book, with a beautiful tactile quality, made for eternity: printed on paper of one hundred percent cotton and water, with a steel spine. In all its beauty, the book also has something perverse: for many it remains an unattainable mystery, because it is not for sale anywhere.
