Honoré Daumier: Les gens de justice, c. 1850, one of a limited edition series of 39 lithographs satirizing the French legal system of the day. "Oui, on veut dépouiller cet orphelin, que je ne qualifie pas de jeune, puis qu'il a cinquante sept ans, mails il n'en est pas moins orphelin.... je me rassure toute fois, messieurs, car la justice a toujours les yeux ouverts sur toutes les coupables menées...." On wove paper. Numbered lower left in pencil: 401/500. Monogram (h.D) lower left in the plate and signed in pencil lower right. Age-toning on the right-hand side of the paper, and some mild spotting to margins and text. Paper is a bit curled at the edges. Otherwise good condition. Sheet size: 37.5 × 30.5 cm Image size: 30 × 22 cm Sleeping judges, double-tongued attorneys, and the morally inept. These are the stories behind the series Les Gens de Justice by Honoré Daumier.
