Graphite on Paper Sketch (Sanseido Published Commemorative Reprint) - Hashiguchi Goyo (1880-1921) - Graphite on Paper Sketch no. 9 - Uit de serie "Collection of Sketches of Beauties" - 1976
Hashiguchi Goyo is one of the most famous Japanese woodblock print artists of the 20th century. Goyo only lived to be 41 years old and his output of woodblock prints is very limited (11 'bijin-ga', 4 landscapes, 1 'kacho-e').
Because of his premature death, Goyo left behind a great volume of unfinished work, including a sketchbook with 25 'Sketches of Beauties' (1918–1921). Some of the sketches are very well known as they were used as 'genga' (base sketches) for his woodblock prints.
In 1976, publisher Sanseido produced a limited commemorative issue (an edition of 500 copies) of 25 sketches from his famous sketchbook, commissioned by Goyo's heirs.
The very fine printing process used for this is most likely lithographic. Each sketch is printed on high-quality museum-art paper. Very detailed, of the same size and identical to Goyo's original graphite sketches, including the 'scribbles'.
The sketch on offer here is no. 9 comes from the set number 435. The edition number can be found on the box in which the sketch was originally stored (see last photo). The box is not included.
