THE STORY
Swordfish bill/tusk hand carved with traditional Maori Wheku and Tiki carving. Wheku, meaning 'carved face', depicts the face of an ancestor. The Wheku is generally found at the apex of the gable on a Wharenui, the Maori meeting house, and symbolizes an important ancestor after whom the house was named. The eyes of this Maori have been decorated with abalone shell, adding striking detail.
