Sophia Loren is an Italian actress. She was born Sofia Villani Scicolone on 20th September 1934 in Rome.
A major actress of Italian cinema, world-renown, she has appeared in many films since the late 1950s. She obtained her biggest roles in the 1960s such as the dramatic character of La Ciociara; her performance is crowned by the two highest awards in the cinema, the Women's Performing Award at the Cannes Film Festival and the Best Actress Oscar in 1962 for the “Two women” movie
Sofia meets for the first time the Italian film producer Carlo Ponti (1912-2007) in 1950, when she is only 16 years old and he is 37. He is an occasional judge in beauty contests. He then went on to guide the start of the girl's career, then of the young woman. She became an actress and appeared in nearly twenty films early 1950s. In 1952, Ponti's friend, Goffredo Lombardo, at the head of the production company Titanus, hired the young Sofia in “Africa sotto i mari” -Woman f the Red Sea) and found her the pseudonym "Sophia Loren".
The Ponti-Loren couple found themselves illegal in Italy, where the laws were still largely inspired by the Catholic tradition: they asked for French citizenship, which was granted to the two concubines by the French Prime Minister at the time, Georges Pompidou. In 1965, Ponti regularized his divorce in France and, thus, was able to marry Loren by the standards on 9th April 1966, almost nine years after the first annulled marriage.
The couple then has two sons: Carlo Jr. born in 1968, and Edoardo born in 1973.
Sophia Loren remained married to Carlo Ponti until his death on 10th January 2007 from a lung condition.
