Leslie Richard Groves (17th August 1896 in Albany, New York - 13th July 1970 (age 73) in Washington) was an American military officer responsible for the Manhattan Project.
In September 1942, he was appointed brigadier-general on a temporary basis and military director of the top secret atomic bomb development project, which he chose the name “Manhattan Project”, although he would have preferred to go on site. It confirms Robert Oppenheimer's choice of the New Mexico site.

In Roland Joffé's film, ‘The Masters of the Shadow’, which tells the story of the Manhattan Project, his role is played by Paul Newman.

After World War II, he was appointed Chairman of the General Advisory Committee, which advised the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission...
